Detergents
As most stains are acidic in nature, detergents are usually formulated as an alkaline product to neutralise them. Brunner Mond products are therefore essential in the production of a variety of laundry cleaning and dishwashing formulations where they help to enhance the cleaning properties.
Sodium Carbonate, due to its level of alkalinity is used to boost "builders" (water softeners) such as zeolites and phosphates, but also acts as a co-builder. Sodium Carbonate is a key raw material in the production of percarbonates, silicates and phosphates which are also used extensively in household cleaning products.
With its lower pH Sodium Bicarbonate may be substituted for Sodium
Carbonate where a milder detergent is required. Its limited solubility is also advantageous in the production of hard surface cleaners. Crex® has a pH between that of
Soda Ash and Sodium Bicarbonate and its "builder" properties allow it to be formulated into detergents or added directly to the washing cycle as a dedicated water softener.
