Q: Who are Brunner Mond ?

A: Brunner Mond Group Limited is a leading international manufacturer and supplier of alkaline chemicals. Our European operations are based at Northwich, Cheshire in the UK and at Delfzijl, Groningen in the Netherlands. The company’s African operations are based at its subsidiary company, Magadi Soda,
in Kenya.

Q: What products do Brunner Mond manufacture ?

A: As Europe’s second largest manufacturer of sodium carbonate (soda ash), Brunner Mond produce Light and Granular (Dense) grades in the UK and the Netherlands.

Brunner Mond is also one of the world's leading manufacturer's of sodium bicarbonate. A wide range of grades are manufactured to meet EP and USP requirements as well as products for specialist applications eg. Dessikarb®, an explosion dust suppressant or Alkakarb® for animal nutrition.

Other products manufactured include Crex®, a granular form of sodium sesquicarbonate; a range of calcium chloride solutions including Aquex®, which has been developed for the refrigerant sector. A comprehensive range of sodium silicate solutions is also marketed.

Q: Is Brunner Mond ISO 9001.2000 certified ?

A: All BM products manufactured in the UK are ISO 9001.2000 certified .The Netherlands production site is registered to ISO 9002.

Q: Is Brunner Mond ISO 14001 certified ?

A: The UK sites are certified to ISO 14001.

Q: Are Brunner Mond products Kosher approved ?

A: All UK manufactured products, with the exception of Hydrophobic Grade Sodium Bicarbonate and Crex, have Kosher approval. Products manufactured in the Netherlands are currently awaiting approval.

Q: Does Brunner Mond sell its products globally ?

A: Yes, Brunner Mond currently sells its products to over 60 countries worldwide.

The majority of sales outside the EU are undertaken through agents in the assigned country.

Sodium Sesquicarbonate - Indefinite when stored in a cool and dry environment.

Sodium Silicate - Indefinite, however it is important to minimise the impact of atmospheric CO2 on soluble silicates in storage. Drums and tanks should be kept closed as much as possible.

Calcium Chloride - Indefinite

Q: Do Brunner Mond products contain allergens ?

A: Brunner Mond products are free from any of the listed substances.

Q: Do Brunner Mond products contain “genetically modified organisms” ?

A: Brunner Mond products do not contain any genetically modified organisms.

Q: Are Brunner Mond products “irradiate free” ?

A: Brunner Mond does not expose any of its products to irradiation.

Q: In what types of package are Brunner Mond products available ?

A: Brunner Mond products are available in bulk either by sea or road, and also in various packed forms.

Q: Does Brunner Mond sodium carbonate have food approval ?

A: Sodium carbonate (soda ash) manufactured by Brunner Mond in both the UK and and the Netherlands is used in food applications. It is a permitted food additive under the current legislation “EU Directive 2000/63/EC Food Additives Other Than Colours & Sweeteners” and meets the chemical requirements of The Food Chemicals Codex. It is not, however, classified as food grade, as all the requirements for Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) plus Hazard and Critical Control Points (HACCP) evaluation are not fully in place.

Q: Does Brunner Mond refined sodium bicarbonate have food approval ?

A: Sodium Bicarbonate has a long history as a food ingredient, its leavening action in baking products is known universally.

Brunner Mond manufactures high purity refined sodium bicarbonate that meets the requirement of the Food Chemical Codex, and “EU Directive 2000/63/EC Food Additives Other Than Colours & Sweeteners”. The manufacturing process is operated using a food orientated approach supported by a HACCP process.

Q: Do Brunner Mond undertake animal testing on their products ?

A: No, Brunner Mond does not undertake or sponsor any animal testing on its products.

Q: Does Brunner Mond calcium chloride liquor have food approval ?

A: Chemically the product meets the requirements of the Food Chemical Codex, 4th. Edition 1996 and the 1st. Supplement to the Codex (01.12.97). However, the manufacturing process does not meet the demands of GMP, nor are HACCP controls in place.

Q: Is microbiological testing carried out on Brunner Mond products

A: Microbiological testing is performed quarterly on refined sodium bicarbonate and annually on sodium carbonate. Other products have been tested on occasion. The results are available on request.

Q: Can Brunner Mond products contain Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE)

A: Brunner Mond products are manufactured from naturally occurring raw materials and are entirely free from Bovine, Ovine and Caprine sources of Spongiform Encephalopathies eg. BSE ‘mad cow disease’.

There is no contact with meat or meat products of any kind via contact with packaging, lubricants, materials or additives used in the production or supply of the product.
