SAFETY, HEALTH & ENVIRONMENT REPORT 2004

Brunner Mond has been supporting the restoration of Cheshire's last open pan salt works since 1993 by contributing a member of staff to the Trustee Board of the Lion Salt Works Trust. Brine and salt are important raw materials to Brunner Mond and we consider it important to help preserve the last surviving Victorian salt works which dates back to 1894. The Trust needs the support of the modern day chemical industry to restore and interpret this Scheduled Monument to the public and we are pleased to be part of this important project which has not only local but international importance.

Anderton Boat Lift
The weather was good to for the Mersey Basin Conservation day this year; and the setting couldn't be better as our team met at the Anderton Boat Lift and enjoyed views of the works from the other side. Following the usual format the assembled volunteers split into work parties. Brunner Mond's chose to be active for our morning session and worked hard to thin an area of woodland that had been planted some years earlier, but now needed attention to prevent it becoming congested. The felled saplings were divided, birch and alder were set aside for charcoal manufacture, and the rest were chipped. After an excellent buffet lunch our team was taken up to Marbury and shown how to lay a hedge, and then given the chance to do it themselves. The Mersey Basin Campaign, established in 1985, has done a great deal in partnership with the private and public sector to improve the waterside environment. Brunner Mond has welcomed the opportunity to participate in such activities which have benefited our local environment. Mac Thorpe of Brunner Mond, is a director of The Mersey Basin Business Foundation who are the group responsible for overseeing the overall management of the campaign.

Carden's Ferry Footbridge

A new footbridge linking Northwich Town Centre with Anderton and Marbury is now being put to good use by walkers and cyclists alike. It was feared that such a project would be too expensive but following the discovery of old photographs in Brunner Mond's archives the bridge has now been built.

The photographs showed that a cableway used to carry materials from the works to the lagoons had once spanned the river near to the site of the proposed bridge. The photographs and drawings were used to locate the original foundations. These foundations proved to be intact and in excellent condition which enabled the bridge to be built on top of them, thus saving a substantial amount of time and money.
