LAND DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

The Brunner Mond Land Development Project
Brunner Mond has been manufacturing in the Northwich area of Cheshire for more than 130 years and as the industry has modernised and become more efficient the land area required has reduced. Over a long period of time this has led to large tracts of former industrial land becoming available for redevelopment.

Winnington Urban Village The largest area of semi-derelict land is the site of the former Wallerscote Works which is to be transformed into a new Urban Village alongside the River Weaver. The plans for the Urban Village include:

  • up to 1200 homes, including a significant element of affordable housing
  • places of work, shops and community facilities
  • improvements to the local transport infrastructure
  • a wide range of new homes
  • a new primary school
  • a substantial cash contribution towards the ‘Northwich Vision’ development.

Brunner Mond has sold the Wallerscote site to the Winnington Urban Village Consortium (consisting of Taylor Woodrow Development, Morris Homes and Barratt Homes) who are now taking the project forward. Outline planning approval was granted by Vale Royal Borough Council in April 2007 and site preparation started shortly afterwards. Brunner Mond’s remaining activities on the Wallerscote site – warehousing and finished goods storage and despatch – will be relocated over the next few years as the Urban Village development progresses with the last stage being the demolition of the large silos on Wallerscote island.

Lostock Power Station Site
As part of its Local Plan for Waste, Cheshire County Council has identified the location of the decommissioned power station at Lostock Works as one of the potential sites for an Energy from Waste plant. More information can be found at www.cheshire.gov.uk/planning/wastelocalplan

Wallerscote Limebeds
The limebeds have been closed as a waste disposal site. The long term intention for this area is to consider how the site could be restored and returned to beneficial public use although no specific plans have yet been adopted.
